Radiation Oncology
Cancer Treatment Method
Radiation is one method available to treat various types of cancers. Radiation oncologists treat cancer with radioactive rays, using techniques such as X-rays or radioactive materials placed directly in tumors to kill the cancer cells. Lima Memorial radiation oncologists have access to some of the most advanced radiation equipment available today, operated by experienced radiation technologists.
Precise Cancer Treatment
Each radiation treatment plan is specific to your type and stage of cancer. Today, new diagnostic and treatment equipment allow us diagnose and treat cancer with unprecedented precision. Those treatments may include the use of advanced technology including:
- IMRT, IGRT, SBRT and 3D conformal radiation therapy of the brain, head & neck, lungs, GU, GI and skin
- SBRT for solitary pulmonary nodules
- External beam radiation therapy for skin cancer and keloids
- Radiation therapy for hip arthroplasty
- I-131 for thyroid cancer
The objective of radiation treatment is to treat cancer as aggressively as possible − while keeping you as comfortable as possible.
Leading Edge in Radiation Therapy with Varian TrueBeam™
The Cancer Program offers the leading edge in radiation oncology therapy with Varian TrueBeam™ linear accelerator technology that includes state-of-the-art enhancements. This technology provides advanced cancer treatment techniques and treats moving targets with great speed and accuracy, preserving healthy tissue. The TrueBeam™ can effectively treat cancer anywhere in the body where radiation treatment is indicated, including lung, breast, prostate and head & neck.
For select cancers, stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) delivers a high dose of radiation over fewer treatments. What traditionally takes four to six weeks of daily treatment can now be accomplished with five or less SBRT treatments.
