Pacemaker & Cardiac Defibrillator (ICD) Procedures
The Cardiology team at Lima Memorial has a long history of innovation and advanced care. In fact, in 2004, the Lima Memorial Heart & Vascular Institute became the first cardiac center in the region to surgically place an implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD) in a patient. This milestone is just one example of our commitment to providing Great Care to our community.
Cardiac Defibrillators (ICD): Treatment for Fast Heart Beat or Erratic Heart Rhythms
An implantable cardiac defibrillator, often called an ICD, is a small electronic device installed inside your chest to prevent sudden death from cardiac arrest due to abnormally fast or erratic heart rhythms (tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation, respectively).
The ICD monitors your heart rhythm. When your heart is beating normally, the device is inactive. If your heart develops a life-threatening tachycardia, the ICD delivers an electrical shock or shocks to the heart to return the heart rhythm to normal.
Pacemakers: Treatment for Slow Heartbeat
Pacemakers are commonly used to correct an abnormally slow heartbeat by sending electrical impulses to one or more chambers of your heart. There are a variety of conditions that may call for pacing.
Pacemakers may be permanent or temporary. A permanent pacemaker is implanted into your chest during a minor surgical procedure. A short stay in the hospital may be required, and you may need to take medications afterward to help your heart maintain a normal rhythm.
What to Expect: Pacemaker or ICD Procedures
For pacemaker and ICD implantations, a small incision is made in the shoulder area where the device is placed. You will be monitored throughout the procedure to ensure your comfort and safety. You may need to stay in the hospital for a short period of time for observation. Your doctor will also provide instructions on wound care, activity restrictions and follow-up visits.
Pacemaker Clinic
The Lima Memorial Pacemaker Clinic offers specialized care for patients with pacemakers. We regularly check and adjust your device to ensure it's working effectively and supporting your heart's rhythm.
