Breast Biopsies
A breast biopsy is a minor surgical procedure to collect a small sample of breast tissue for direct examination. A breast biopsy is sometimes indicated if the radiologist sees an abnormality on a mammogram or breast ultrasound.
The breast biopsy can be performed using mammographic (stereotactic breast biopsy) or ultrasound guidance. Imaging is used to precisely locate the breast abnormality. The skin is numbed over this area, and a tiny incision is made in the skin of the breast. A needle is guided to the site to collect a tissue sample. Lima Memorial uses the Mammotome Breast Biopsy System, which can collect multiple samples at once with a single needle to reduce discomfort and recovery time.
