Mammography
Early Detection & Treatment of Breast Cancer
The odds of beating breast cancer have never been better, thanks to advancements in early detection and treatment. Lima Memorial joins this fight by having the latest enhancement in mammographic imaging at the Women’s Health Center at the Lima Memorial Medical Park. Designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology, the Women’s Health Center offers the full spectrum of mammogram services. In addition to digital mammograms, patients also have the option to have a 3D mammogram performed.
3D mammograms, or Tomosynthesis, is the newest screening and diagnostic test for breast cancer offering women and their physicians a more accurate way to detect the presence of breast abnormalities. 3D mammography is a significant advance in mammographic imaging. With 3D technology, multiple images from varying angles are taken, allowing the radiologist to see more clearly through the multiple layers of breast tissue. According to Journal of American Medical Association, trials have shown that 3D mammography may find up to 40 percent more invasive breast cancers and is able to detect cancers smaller in size and at an earlier stage.

Whole-Breast Ultrasound
Detecting Small Cancers in Dense Breast Tissue with the ABUS 2.0
Detecting breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages is critical. For women with dense breast tissue, small cancers in the breasts may not be found right away using a mammogram screening; this is because both dense tissue and cancer appear white on a mammogram. Lima Memorial Health System is helping to detect more of these missed cancers by offering the InveniaTM ABUS 2.0 (Automated Breast Ultrasound System) in addition to 3D mammography screenings for women with dense breast tissue.
The ABUS screening is designed to enhance the consistency, reproducibility and sensitivity of breast ultrasound, improving the detection of cancers in dense breast tissue that may not be found with mammography alone. If there is cancer present in dense breast tissue, the suspicious mass will appear black against the white, dense tissue. The ABUS has the potential to detect 35.7 percent more cancers and save many more lives in our community.
It is recommended that all women receive yearly mammograms as suggested by their doctor, and if they have they have been informed they have dense breast tissue, they should speak with their doctor or radiologist to determine if a screening using the ABUS (in addition to a mammogram) would be beneficial.
