Lima Memorial Health System is now offering Inspire therapy, an innovative treatment option for patients experiencing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Inspire therapy is for those who cannot use continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy and consists of a small device implanted in the body during a same-day outpatient procedure.
Inspire works inside the body with a patient’s natural breathing process to treat sleep apnea. Mild stimulation opens the airway during sleep, allowing oxygen to flow naturally. The patient uses a small handheld remote to turn Inspire on before bed and off when they wake up.
OSA affects 22 million Americans and occurs when muscles supporting the soft tissues in the throat (tongue and soft palate) relax and narrow the airway, making breathing difficult. The brain detects the lack of oxygen and wakes up the body long enough to take a breath. This leads to multiple sleep disruptions and poor quality of sleep. Untreated OSA can lead to vehicle and workplace accidents, worsening mood and memory, stroke, heart attack and even death.
“This is truly a breakthrough piece of technology we are bringing to our patients experiencing sleep apnea,” says Dr. Fadi Abbass, ENT specialist at Lima Memorial Health System. “The Inspire device will allow our patients to receive a better night’s rest without the inconvenience of a CPAP hose and mask. It will help them achieve a better quality of life and feel more like themselves again.”
