Lima Memorial Health System is excited to announce a rededication ceremony for the hospital on Memorial Day, May 27, 2024, immediately following Lima’s Memorial Day Parade. As part of its 125th Anniversary celebrations, the ceremony will commemorate the rededication of Lima City Hospital as Lima Memorial Hospital on Memorial Day 1933 to honor Allen County residents who served in the armed forces.
Lima Memorial's journey began more than 125 years ago when a group of community members recognized a need for a local hospital and organized a play to raise funds. Fundraising efforts culminated in the opening of Lima City Hospital in 1899 at the corner of East Market and Scott Streets near the Ottawa River, now the site of Lima Senior High School. The facility had 13 beds and charged $7 per week for a non-private room and $10 per week for a private room. 107 patients were admitted in the first year. The rededicated five-story building that opened in 1933 could accommodate 144 patients, a significant expansion from the hospital’s humble beginnings.
“It is truly an honor to rededicate Lima Memorial on such a meaningful day in our health system’s history,” shared Mike Swick, President & CEO of Lima Memorial Health System. “This is a special event that will allow us to reflect on our history and look forward to celebrating our future and achieving many more milestones with our patients and community.”
The ceremony will take place at the entrance of Lima Memorial Health System's Welcome Center and will include the unveiling of a commemorative art piece, a Proclamation from the City of Lima and a keynote address honoring our past and present staff. The community is invited to join in this special event, which will be followed by light refreshments and guided tours of the health system.
