Mark was in his sixties when he received his first colonoscopy. Although he showed no signs or symptoms, his doctor recommended the screening as a preventative measure. Mark was referred to Dr. Shannon Wesley at Lima Memorial Health System Surgical Specialists for his colonoscopy, where polyps were discovered and later found to be cancerous.
After undergoing surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, Mark is thankful for the care he received in managing his condition. Despite his challenges, Mark remains in good spirits and now shares his experience to encourage others to get screened.
“I’ve been talking to all my friends and classmates, telling them, don’t wait,” Mark says. “It doesn’t matter how old you are anymore. You should get screened. Even younger people need to think about it.”
Initially, Mark was apprehensive about the screening, something many men can relate to. He shares, “I was always scared about doing it, and I think that’s common for men. It’s a terrifying thought.”
Mark deeply appreciates the care he received from Dr. Wesley’s team and the Lima Memorial Oncology Services team.
“I couldn’t have had a better team take care of me,” he reflects. “Every time I went to the Medical Park or seventh floor for oncology services, I felt comfortable. The staff made sure I had everything I needed, and they really became like family to me. That support made all the difference.”
Mark encourages others to take the important step of getting screened. “Don’t wait,” he urges. “It could save your life.”
