Second Chances Given Thanks to CT Cardiac Calcium Score Screening

For siblings Jim and Chris, heart disease was the last thing that came to mind regarding health concerns. Neither of them experienced chest tightness, pain, shortness of breath or any other symptoms that may signal heart problems. It was a simple ten-minute test that changed their perspectives on heart disease, health and life overall.
Jim visited Lima Memorial earlier this year to help a family member and found himself reading a card that suggested screening for heart disease using CT Cardiac Calcium Scoring. Knowing his age and family history, he took the test, which revealed an extremely high score that predicted a large amount of calcium (plaque) buildup in his arteries. A plan of care was determined for Jim that included bypass surgery.
Jim very much wanted to delay his surgery, but the cardiac team informed him that he was at a high risk of a cardiac event just walking out of the hospital. This came as a surprise to Jim, as he had completed 45 minutes of exercise at the YMCA not long before his blockage was discovered.
"I'm very lucky for taking that ten-minute test," says Jim.
Knowing what Jim had gone through, Jim's sister, Chris, and the rest of their siblings felt prompted to take the test. Four out of five siblings took the test, with Jim and Chris receiving news their tests had resulted in high, concerning numbers.
"My score was very high," shares Chris. "But I am very fortunate I did not need heart surgery, as I learned I can manage my condition with just medication."
Both Chris and Jim are now extremely aware of the prevalence of undetected heart disease and are thankful for the second chances the test has given their family.
